Rebels with a Cause (DVD)
Chronicling the political atmosphere of the 1960s by focusing on one of the largest student activist organizations of that time, the Students for a Democratic Society (SDS), REBELS WITH A CAUSE includes archival footage of protests and present-day interviews with former members. Helen Garvy, the director of REBELS WITH A CAUSE, was one of those members. Her interviews with Tom Hayden, Bernardine Dohrn, Todd Gitlin, and Carl Oglesby explain the group's growth into the Black Power movement and the women's movement as well as the group's beginning in 1960 with a few hundred members. The SDS issued the Port Huron Statement, a document that was circulated at campuses across the country and soon drew thousands of idealistic followers to its call for participatory democracy. Their members organized action projects along with SNCC
(Student Non-violent Coordinating Committee) and CORE (Congress of Racial Equality). When the U.S. government entered into an undeclared war in Vietnam, the SDS organized, protested, and quickly grew to more than 100,000 members. Garvy combines footage of protests, sit-ins, and teach-ins with interviews, making REBELS WITH A CAUSE a history of, and tribute to, all the thousands of people who protested for social and political change.DVD Features:Region 1Keep CaseSingle Side - Single LayerFull Frame - 1.33Additional Release Materials: Featurettes - 1. Director John Boorman's harrowing adaptation of James Dickey's best-selling novel is a nightmarish descent into backwoods Americana. When four unsuspecting urbanites head into the mountains of northern Georgia for a weekend canoe trip, they have no idea what's in store for them. The group's macho leader, Lewis Medlock (Burt Reynolds), is driven by Hemingway-esque notions of man's ability to conquer nature, while his three friends--Bobby Trippe (Ned Beatty), Drew Ballinger (Ronny Cox), and Ed Gentry (Jon Voight)--aren't so sure. As the men begin to navigate their way down the precarious rapids, they discover that nature isn't the only one out to get them. The eventual appearance of two menacing hillbillies turns the vacation into an all-out nightmare.Photographed by the great Vilmos Zsigmond (MCCABE& MRS. MILLER, THE DEER HUNTER), DELIVERANCE is a compelling meditation on the dangers of masculine ritual. Reynolds dives headlong into the role that would make him a superstar, as does Beatty, whose legendary big-screen debut will never be forgotten. Boorman's thriller made two other lasting contributions to the pop-culture lexicon: the dueling-banjos sequence and the infamous line, Squeal like a pig!DVD Features:Region 1Snap CaseFull Screen - 1.33Widescreen - 1.85Audio: Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound - English Dolby Digital Mono - French Subtitles - English, French - OptionalAdditional Release Material: Trailers - 1.Original Theatrical Trailers Documentary - THE DANGEROUS WORLD OF DELIVERANCEInteractive Features: Interactive Menus Scene AccessText/Photo Galleries: Production Notes
