Director Wim Wenders assembled this experimental project with the legendary American director Nicholas Ray. Shot as Ray was dying of cancer, the film finds him surrounded by family and friends as he reflects on his life and career. As he tells some amazing stories about his successes and compromises, it becomes clear that Wenders and Ray are creating something that is far more than a documentary, a film about a great artist and the nature of collaboration.DVD Features:Region 0Keep CaseAnamorphic - 1.77Audio: Dolby Digital 5.1 - English Dolby Digital 2.0 - EnglishAdditional Release Material: Audio Commentary - 1. Derrida (DVD) Derrida (DVD) » Derrida (DVD)

Directors Kirby Dick and Amy Ziering Kofman present this documentary portrait of the intellectual and philosopher Jacques Derrida. Beginning with his theory of deconstruction--the notion of getting to the basics behind our thought processes and the way in which we view the world--Derrida is portrayed naturally walking down the street or shuffling about his house. He frequently observes the camera, noting that its presence alone makes the situation unnatural, and not real. For instance, he says, on a normal day at home, he would stay in his pajamas and bathrobe rather than being (as we see him on film) dressed nicely and slightly primped. Derrida's interaction with the camera, the filmmakers, and others--his wife, his peers, his students--is in itself the embodiment of his theories. He talks about narcissism and being incapable of viewing himself--but rather being viewed by the other--while watching tapes of himself, or looking at his own portrait. He travels to South Africa and visits Nelson Mandela's old prison cell, then conducts a discussion with a group of students about forgiveness. Bits of his essays are read in intervals, as are brief biographies explaining his origins and experiences as a Jewish Algerian. While DERRIDA seems to be more about the man and his quotidian life rather than his work and writings, one might guess that separating the two would seem, at least to the philosopher himself, not possible.DVD Features:Region [unknown]Keep CaseWidescreen - 1.85Additional Release Material: Deleted Scenes with Commentary Audio Commentary - 1. Russian Ark (DVD) Russian Ark (DVD) » Russian Ark (DVD)

A visually hypnotizing cinematic feat, RUSSIAN ARK is Alexsandr Sokurov's spellbinding ode to St. Petersburg's State Hermitage Museum. Shot in one fluid take using High Definition video cameras, the photography floats and careens through the lavish corridors of the museum, examining its architectural details while following a dreamlike plot. A cast of 867 actors supply the action of the film, whether dancing the mazurka in a lively ballroom, performing a military salute, or watching a theater performance. The Marquis (Sergey Dreiden), an aged but limber European dressed in solid black, is the film's charismatic guide, leading the narrator--who is the unidentified voice behind the camera--through each doorway and into each gallery in a sweeping tour of the Hermitage. While the Marquis interacts with some of the guests, debating about Italian art with a couple of Russian scholars, delighting over rich paintings by Rubens and Van Dyck with an angelic blind woman, taking a lively brunette for a spin on the dance floor, others do not see him. Even the narrator suspects that the Marquis is a ghost, long dead and wandering the Hermitage in a quest to better understand history. Time periods, indicated by style of dress, fluctuate between the 1700s and the present. Famous Russian figures, such as Peter the Great, Nicholas I, and Catherine the Great appear and then disappear, with no explanation of their roles. Between the Marquis and the narrator, confusion reigns. They are spectators and trespassers in this mysterious space, trying to find their way.DVD Features:Region 0Keep CaseLetterboxedInteractive Features: Scene Access Interactive Menus

The Bravados (DVD) » The Bravados (DVD)

When four men who Jim Douglas (Gregory Peck) believes raped and killed his wife escape from their death sentences, Jim sets out to track the men down and enact his own vengeance. An honest man, Jim sees his actions as just and brave, but as he crisscrosses Mexico to exact an eye for an eye, he comes to realize that he has lost something of himself in his self-absorbed quest for revenge. Peck did his best work in characters with strong arcs, and THE BRAVADOS is no exception. Carrying the film from scene to scene, Peck hits his mark dead on when he realizes that the men he is after may actually be innocent, providing an exceptional cinematic moment. Joan Collins does a fine job as Josefa Velarde, an old flame of Jim's, but PeckAes real costar is the gorgeous color photography of the mountains and ravines of the Mexican countryside.
