Touching the Void (DVD) Touching the Void (DVD) » Touching the Void (DVD)

Bringing to life Joe Simpson's book of the same name, TOUCHING THE VOID details the near-death experience he endured during a 1985 attempt to climb the only mountain in the Peruvian Andes that had not been scaled--the 21,000-foot Siula Grande. With his partner Simon Yates, Simpson successfully reached the peak after a three-day climb. During the descent, however, he fell and shattered several bones in his right leg. Yates attempted to lower Simpson down the mountain 300 feet at a time, but the process was slow and painful for both men. With no food or water, they would both surely die--which left Yates with a painful choice to make--cutting Simpson loose, thus ensuring at least his own survival. This was only the beginning of Simpson's mind-boggling odyssey.Director Kevin McDonald (ONE DAY IN SEPTEMBER) tells this compelling story by combining talking-head interviews with Simpson and Yates and stunningly photographed narrative footage--in which Simpson and Yates' ordeal is actually reenacted on Siula Grande. McDonald's reenactment footage is both engrossing and eye-popping and it could easily stand alone as its own one-of-a-kind adventure film. The interviews, however, add depth that make this a unique, thrilling, and emotional piece of cinema.DVD Features:Region 1Keep CaseWidescreen - 1.85Audio: Dolby Digital 5.1 - EnglishAdditional Release Material: Featurettes - 1.Making of TOUCHING THE VOID

The Great Escape (DVD) » The Great Escape (DVD)

John Sturges's dramatization of the true story of a group of British, American, and Canadian POWs who successfully escaped from Stalag Luft III in Upper Silesia in March 1944 is arguably the best World War II adventure film ever made. A host of big-name stars meshes beautifully in this meticulous recreation of the legendary escape. Although this is a film about courage, Sturges wisely takes a low-key approach, leavened with humor, rather than allowing the cast to indulge in macho antics. The German high command has filtered out all of the allies' most talented escape artists and placed them in a POW camp specifically designed to foil any unwanted departures. But as soon as they arrive, the prisoners, led by Steve McQueen as the rebellious Virgil Hilts, begin work on a series of tunnels under the direction of Roger Big X
Bartlett (Richard Attenborough). He assigns the POWs to jobs according to their specialties. For more than a year, 600 prisoners, most of whom won't be leaving, work toward an escape that will temporarily disrupt the operations of the German army. THE GREAT ESCAPE, based on the book by Paul Brickhill, featuring many key scenes (McQueen's motorcycle chase, McQueen tossing the baseball against the cell wall, Bronson sliding on his chest in the tunnel) that are simply unforgettable.DVD Features:Region 1Keep CaseWidescreen - 2.35Single Side - Dual LayerAudio: Dolby Digital Mono - English Dolby Digital Mono - FrenchAdditional Release Material: Making-of Trailers - 1. Fonda is agreeably peppery as a teacher in the Old West who wreaks vengeance on the men who murdered her father. Marvin enlists as a drunken old gunfighter trying to retain his old glory and also portrays his twin brother, a rustler with a silver nose. A 60s-style genre spoof with enough action to keep it real. Marvin won an Academy Award for his two performances.DVD Features:Region 1Keep CaseAnamorphic Widescreen 1.85:1Pan& Scan/Full Screen 1.33:1Audio: Dolby Digital Mono - EnglishAdditional Release Materials: Audio Commentary - 1.
