The True Meaning of Pictures (DVD) The True Meaning of Pictures (DVD) » The True Meaning of Pictures (DVD)

Canadian filmmaker Jennifer Baichwal, director of the acclaimed Paul Bowles documentary LET IT COME DOWN, trains her eye on another artist of uncompromising vision in her film THE TRUE MEANING OF PICTURES. For over 30 years, Shelby Lee Adams has been photographing the impoverished mountain dwellers of his native eastern Kentucky, earning critical acclaim for his stark black-and-white portraits of Appalachian life--from families who live without plumbing or electricity to Pentecostal sects whose members drink strychnine and handle rattlesnakes during religious ceremonies. But Adams' work has also garnered a fair share of controversy: critics charge that his photographs exploit their subjects, perpetuate stereotypes about the rural poor, or are sometimes staged by Adams for greater effect. Baichwal's provocative documentary examines these issues and raises complex moral questions about the very nature of art through interviews with Adams' admirers and detractors, samples of his extraordinary work, and footage of the photographer revisiting some of his most famous subjects.DVD Features:Region 1Keep CaseFull Frame - 1.33Audio: Dolby Digital Stereo - EnglishInteractive Features: Scene Access Interactive MenusText/Photo Galleries: Stills/Photos Biographies - 1. Rebels with a Cause (DVD) Rebels with a Cause (DVD) » Rebels with a Cause (DVD)

Chronicling the political atmosphere of the 1960s by focusing on one of the largest student activist organizations of that time, the Students for a Democratic Society (SDS), REBELS WITH A CAUSE includes archival footage of protests and present-day interviews with former members. Helen Garvy, the director of REBELS WITH A CAUSE, was one of those members. Her interviews with Tom Hayden, Bernardine Dohrn, Todd Gitlin, and Carl Oglesby explain the group's growth into the Black Power movement and the women's movement as well as the group's beginning in 1960 with a few hundred members. The SDS issued the Port Huron Statement, a document that was circulated at campuses across the country and soon drew thousands of idealistic followers to its call for participatory democracy. Their members organized action projects along with SNCC
(Student Non-violent Coordinating Committee) and CORE (Congress of Racial Equality). When the U.S. government entered into an undeclared war in Vietnam, the SDS organized, protested, and quickly grew to more than 100,000 members. Garvy combines footage of protests, sit-ins, and teach-ins with interviews, making REBELS WITH A CAUSE a history of, and tribute to, all the thousands of people who protested for social and political change.DVD Features:Region 1Keep CaseSingle Side - Single LayerFull Frame - 1.33Additional Release Materials: Featurettes - 1.
